Question: Binding Guidance for Phat Luv ski

Mammoth Skier

Diva in Training
Just got a great deal on last year's Phat Luv with 102 waist and need bindings for wide ski. I'm 5'3, 128lbs and use 5.0 Din. Would like a easy on binding that works well for getting it back on in powder when I'm lucky enough to find it. Local shop only sells Rossignal so they suggested Ros SAS2 100 Wide. This binding has a large heel piece like the old Look bindings which concerns me. Other options seem to be Marker 12.0 Free and Salomon Z12.

I have the Markers for my Phats - they are maybe two or three seasons old and haven't had problems with them in the powder other than the normal powder struggles (trick is - don't fall right :nono:). I also think they are "standard" for the Phats as Marker is made by K2 just as Look is made by Rossignol.

What ever you buy, make sure you get a wide body binding, otherwise the brakes won't work.

Have fun with them!

With a DIN setting of 5, you don't need the Solomon Z12s, the Z10s will do you fine (Z12s go up to a 12 DIN setting). The Z10 is probably a little less expensive. They are a great binding.

I've done a lot of research on bindings for wide skis. While the taller bindings give you a lot of control, which helps on groomers, especially the newer bindings like Jester and Griffon, there is some thought that a higher binding might help the wide ski carve in situations where you don't want it to carve (pow, trees, bumps) and that a lower profile, freestyle binding gives you the most versatility. I'm sure that Divas can weigh in on both sides of the issue. I have never been able to demo bindings since demo skis are typically mounted with heavy demo bindings, so I've had to go with binding choices based on research, not experience.
