Big Mountain, end of March

We're due to close in ONE week. Can't believe it. I had the BEST SKI DAY OF MY LIFE TODAY and we've got the best conditions I've seen since I moved here. My last run of the day was in crotch deep fresh powder down the back bone of Gray's Golf Course and I handled it just wonderfully on my Outlaws, keeping up pretty well with the two men I was with. It made me feel great, since when I moved here back in 2003 my reaction to fresh snow was that it was all "excess snow" on the trail.

I've come a LONG WAY!!

OMG, what beautiful pics! Looks incredible out there. But closing in ONE WEEK?? Due to low/no skier traffic?? Really surprising, especially given the kind of winter we've had in most northern latitudes....any other options for you for late season?

OH, this snow-starved Pennsylvanian is salivating over those pictures!

I LOVE Montana! I can't believe they're closing soon! Slow crowds?

That's what many places do here even when we have a deep base. We had a 30-50" base when one of the local mountains closed. They said, "Skiers here need to see it snow to be reminded that there is skiing nearby."

I don't think skiers here are THAT stupid. I think it's a case of one particular mountain here I don't like not wanting to make snow when they could, because they are too cheap. They are that way ALL season.

My nearby local hill had a big base, and stayed open as long as possible, but warm temps turned it all to barely skiable dirty mush. They stayed open with a hikeable terrain park, though, for the urban crowd. At least they made an effort.

Beautiful pictures! And I don't think we're that far away -- putting it on my list of places to go!

Closing -- We've got more snow NOW than we've seen in all the years I've been skiing at Bogus Basin (Boise, Idaho area) and we're closing April 13. It's not crowds, though they were a little thin today. It's land use leases from the US Forest Service, or whatever branch of the Federal Government controls the land.

With six feet at the base, and more up top, you'd think they'd let us keep the lifts going so we could keep skiing a few extra weeks! It's not like they're going to be doing anything up there...

I think it's the agreement with the Forest Service because of grizzly bear habitat. But I think they'd ask for an extension if they were getting day trippers. The closest places to me, Fernie and Blacktail, also SEEM to be closing. I'm keeping an eye on them to see if they change their minds. After that, it would be something that I needed a hotel for.

Amazing....

Most of the Colorado mountains are set to close within the next 2 weeks and they just received another 6-16 inches of snow with another 6-10 inches on the way today!

It will be another powder day @ Vail tomorrow!
