Wow has this ever been a great week!
I flew out on Sunday and took it easy adapting to the high altitude. I was a bit concerned because the bottom of the mountain was looking pretty bare in spots!
Monday I skied by myself at BC just getting to know the mountain and working on technique. I met the rest of the participants in the Technique Week (total of 10), Deb Armstrong, and the BC instuctors Gregor, Ross & Nannette (all of whom are amazing instructors) for cocktails and then dinner. We all hit off and were having a great time!
Tuesday we woke up to a blizzard! Yipee! It snowed 2 inches an hour all morning long. We had first tracks on many, many runs.
Deb is such an incredible instuctor! I had heard great things about this program but really wondered if she would really play a big role in the program. Sometimes in these types of programs the "Ambassadors" simply make a showing and then duck out. Deb was out there instructing us, demoing and figuring out how to explain something differently if we didn't have an "Aha" moment. Her way of explaining things is so clear, concise and visual that it really worked for me. I got a few good jumps in and I'm learning how to do it more "gracefully" :D Luckily the videographer didn't catch my not so graceful jump! He did manage to catch a couple of my other crashes though!
Wednesday we skied at Vail. It was an amazing sunny day. Vail had gotten even more snow than BC so we were in heaven skiing the bowls. This was my first time skiing Vail. WOW is it ever huge! We trained mainly off-piste and worked on moguls
I think I have a mental hangup here! Any suggestions for getting over it?
Thursday we were back at BC played in the terrain park for a bit and I loved the half-pipe. It was Deb's first time on a half-pipe so we have some fun video of that...she did manage to get some good air on her 2nd turn though! I was pushing Gregor for something more difficult so he and I went to a double black run that was COVERED with moguls. It seemed like the longest run of my life! I wanted challenging and I certainly got it! I didn't do well on it at all, but now I have something more to work towards! We all met again for Apres Ski, video analysis and Dinner as we did every night.
I skied alone today and worked on everything I learned!
Tomorrow I have a private lesson for the day and then Sunday I will freeski for half of a day then head home.
I am planning on coming back for two seperate Technique weeks next seasons. They are most definitely worth it! The instruction is 5 star, accomodations are great (Park Hyatt) and the friendships that blossom are wonderful.
