Avalanche at Mammoth

Tennessee

I’m getting wind of an avalanche at Mammoth that possibly buried two ski patrollers this morning. Does anyone have real information on this? Concerned…

Its not been good news. I only arrived yesterday, waiting for the AR event to pass, not interested in riders of the storm on top of limited terrain. There were multiple incidents during this storm that have allegedly resulted in loss of life. Social Media shows the conditions and a high amount of persons having to be dug out. I'm so sorry for those who were affected. The avalanche incident on Lincoln with ski patrol less than a year apart from a ski patrol fatality is unreal. Today the mountain is starting with limited terrain both at MM and at June (J1/J2). That was announced yesterday. The lines are insane, I understand people are here on 'vacation' and haven't been able to ski. Only canyon is really open as of this point this morning. 8 lifts, only discovery at main is running. I'm sure the mountain has a plan on its opening, its a great day to cross country ski at Tamarak as a more sane alternative.

How very sad!

Now I understand that this area gets massive amounts of snow at one time and this beings a lot of risk for snowpack instability… but gosh with a death 2 years in a row now on patrol there and then lots of other incidents of burials etc, I’m assuming inbounds?… are they perhaps not using good protocols for mitigation and when/where to operate with these storms? I can’t help but wonder if the additional pressure of a slow start and the holiday break makes the mountain too eager to open for skiers when it really isn’t safe. That is just my inner dialogue without a lot of knowledge of the norm and what exactly is happening there. Not trying to be disrespectful or judgemental of something I don’t know enough about. I’m just seeing all this social media of people being dug out of the snow and it seems very scary.

@MissySki I've been hesitant to post my thoughts here, I suggest reading all of the Mammoth Reddit threads. Especially the RIP Cole thread. Its been a very weird week, and limited operations which allegedly may or may not have been the result of limited patrol staff.

I received an email yesterday re: limited operations again today, and the ability to request a refund from 1800 mammoth.

Seconding what @WaterGirl said above, the news from Mammoth was / is awful. Today they posted about limited operations, because so many employees are attending Cole Murphy's memorial services. So sad.

Over Christmas in Southern California, the storm caused a landslide in our mountains. A portion of Angeles Crest Highway was closed early on Dec 24th in both directions, but the news of what actually happened came out in yesterday evening's news. Apparently there was a huge land/mud slide that took out the highway, and included the base of the Mt. Waterman ski resort. It'll take years to re-build the highway, and I doubt they'll ever re-open the resort.

Per the Instagram post, there was a victim involved in a rescue operation but I haven't heard any further details about that.

Totally understandable. I will take a look at the Reddit threads, thank you for referencing.

So devastating. I was at June & Mammoth the day after they reopened and at least it seemed the majority of guests were being respectful and understanding of the slow reopening. I can’t imagine having to go to work the day after a friend and colleague passed.
