Ski Diva Extraordinaire
Me: 37 yo, 5'3ish, 175 lb, Level 6/7 skiier (the best I can figure),
Somewhat conservative re: speed (hoping that w/ confidence I
get faster)
Ski exclusively in the northeast...for now
Stay primarily on groomed green, blue, and FINALLY blacks
Goals for next year are trees, bumps, and steeper terrain.
What I wanted:
A solid feeling stable ski that could be versatile in most NE conditions. Hardpack, ice, crud, some POW....
What I got:
Atomic Foxy Mama's...150cm
124-74-107 radius 10.5 m @ 150cm
Ok...bare w/ me...this is my first ski review.
Day 1: Bluebird Easter Sunday @ Bromley, VT
Encountered a medley of conditions as the day went by...hard groomed in the a.m. w/ a good portion of death cookies...softening to loose granular by later a.m. Tracked up slush puppy piles by mid afternoon. An occasional icy patch here and there.
Maybe it's just me and my lack of experience w/ a compatable ski...but these things rocked!! They did everything I asked them too and held on for dear life! Phenominal edge grip on the hard/icy stuff. Super stable and easy to maneuver. They are very "turny"...which is great...I'm very turny. Short and medium turns were best. I can't really give an acurate review for long turns as those aren't what I usally do. These skis really shone for me on the steeper runs...the more aggresive I became the more they rewarded me. Nice energy out of the turns. Sort of a "bounce" or "pop" if you will. As I've stated I'm not a speed demon, but these inspired enough confidence in me to put the pedal down more than I previously had. The result was a stable no chatter ride (something unobtainable w/ my last boards) I could carve turns, skid turns, I felt unstopable. This ski gave me plenty of grins that day.
They ate up the slush puppies at the end of the day. Just plowed through like they weren't even there. I felt that they were very forgiving toward the end of the day when I was tired and my technique became lazier.
Day 2: West Mtn, NY w/ 3+ of wet, heavy ungroomed
Let me first say that I have typically in the past AVOIDED a day like this. (Silly, me) I couldn't ski in this stuff to save my life.
Again, the Foxy's performed!! Veggielasagna and I were lucky enough to have 1st and 2nd tracks this particular morning and pretty much felt we had the mountain to ourselves for the rest of the day. My Mamas ate it up. Big tracked up mush piles were of no consequence to them. Barreled through like an SUV. (I would say more like a RAV4 or CRV than Suburban). Veggie convinced me to ski some "bumps", a first for me. Ok...so they were filled in, pillow-y, "waves" truth be told.
No problem....the Foxy's handled it well. BTW, I have been told this is not a good bump ski. <shrug> I don't have the knowledge/understanding to say what is a good bump ski one way or the other. Again, another day of super wide grins and constant giggles. I'm sure other, wider/longer skis would have handled todays conditions even better, but I would say these atomics were "servicable" considering I don't often ski in the new stuff. I can't wait to try them in some less heavy/wet snow next season.
I have seen other reviews stating that these felt heavy. It's funny but I feel they are on the lighter side. This of course is coming after demoing the Volkl Fuegos the week before which felt very heavy. I loved that ski. As a matter of fact I was all set to pull the trigger on the Fuego's when I found the Foxy's for $350. Frugality won out and so far I am not disappointed. My only complaint is that I'm not so fond of the graphics. They are some weird floral that I can't figure out! LOL Now I'm just hoping the weather cooperates long enough for me to get out and ski a bit more on them.
