Anyone here affected by the Midwest floods or tornadoes?

Hope not. Looks pretty bad out there.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the victims.

Yes, I'm affected, indirectly. That dam breach in central WI (shown widely on network tv, with 2 LARGE homes falling) occurred not too far north of my former location. Since the entire contents of the lake emptied into surrounding rivers, many of those rivers are reaching record flood levels now. The peak is expected at the riverfront homes of 2 of my friends this weekend: June 14-15. We are watching the NOAA hydrology prediction charts with great concern. Now Cedar Rapids, IA, is underwater and experiencing widespread evacuations. It's quite catastrophic. SD, you probably remember the 100 year floods that hit Keene, NH, particularly hard in spring 07. Now it's the Midwest's turn - but this is more widespread, alas. I'm worried. The lake that was breached, Lake Delton, was a HUGE tourist area. It's now a mud flat. Unbelievable, and very, very scary.

The Boy's folks are trying to sell their house and it flooded for the first time in 100 years (coincidentally, the same weekend The Boy's grandfather passed, so it was NOT a good weekend). They had some issues getting it cleaned and then getting to airports to fly to the funeral, but everyone is safe and ok.

It's interesting here to say the least! I spent the afternoon with my daughter who works with the SE WI Regional Planning Commission doing stream and lake evaluations, watching the DNR remove a dam on Lake Nagawicka - in SE WI to do a controlled flood down stream. The fear with several of the lakes in the area is that what happened to Lake Delton may happen to several other lakes in the area if the dams collapse. The ground is so supersaturated that dam footings have nothing to hold onto. We had 9.5 inches of rain over the weekend and another 3 last night. Although we're dealing with just a little seepage in the basement, there have been widespread evacuations of lower areas in the flood plain. Interestingly we had the 100 year flood with 7 inches of rain in a short time in 1997, which meant we had the 150 year flood in 1998 when we had 10 inches of rain in a short time. So this time they're calling it a 500 year flood in 2008 - this on top of 2nd most snowfall recorded this past winter. It's hard to imagine all the drought stricken states when we've been inundated that past week. Stock up on food this summer because I suspect food prices will go through the roof with all of the farm areas in the midwest being underwater.

On a lighter note - my kayak is still in the garage - I've not needed it to navigate the roadways here.

Kimmy, I'll keep you and the boys in my thoughts and prayers. Turmoil on top of loss is a terribly, well, terrible.

As for the Midwest. ............ugh, we've been without power since 2 AM(friday) with a promise of restored power by tomorrow some time late evening. Right now we're using our generator for some basic necessities, (freezers n such) and I thought I'd seize the chance to plug in for a minute and check in here and Epic.(That's a necessity, right? ;))

Roads washed our, basements, sewers and roofs flooded. Our business has been a bit busy today with bailing people out. Literally!
We're okay, though I won't be around so much until we get power restored. I hope all the other divas are in good form too!

Most of my friends and family are safe for the time being. However, one friend lives riverfront at a testy location, and they are under evacuation watch. Lots of sandbagging going on in that region (IL/WI border). Most residents are advised that they will need to evacuate on short notice if crest goes above prediction on Sunday.

Stay safe, everyone. The rest of it is just all stuff. Leave it.

Was stuck in the Chicago airport last Sunday afternoon and evening. our flight was cancelled so we camped out with thousands of other stranded travelers and finally boarded a plane at 11:30 on stand by. Held at the gate until lightening subsided, taxied out to the runway and then was grounded for another 90 minutes until we took off in rain and some lightening. Spooky. Home at 4:30 a.m. Monday and haven't had time to rest and recover yet.... Planning to do that this weekend.

I saw a lot of the flooding from the air as we flew from Denver to Cincinnati on Tuesday. Crazy.

I also remember flying over the major flooding in 1993, on our way to Mexico for our senior trip. I think I actually have some pictures somewhere that I took from the plane.

It's a horrifying, yet amazing thing to see from 30,000+ feet.

The flooding around here is minor compared to other parts of the midwest.
Good news is that we're in hilly land so those effected most are those in the valley's. Our business is doing a lot of flood clean up, and a few of our dirt jobs got washed away, so we're redoing a bunch of work that was fairly complete.

The golf course where I played with my dad yesterday for fathers day had catfish laying in a few of the fairways from being stranded after their ponds receded.

I'm truly fortunate, both in location and resources.
Thanks for the well wishes all!

These storms roll in fast tho!!!

Record flooding and river levels in the region where I used to live (south central WI). Crest not expected until Wednesday. At least 2 if not more feet over the record all-time high. No one I know evacuated yet, but huge property damage, with the worst yet to come.

I feel pretty stupid having posted about a travel delay as the nightmare of flooding continued through the week.

Anyone here from Cedar Rapids, IA?

I lost my home and everything I owned to fire 5 years ago and that was tough, but when your whole community is under water and experiencing that type of loss, it must be awful. Gives me a little insight into what residents of war-torn countries must go through....

We are lucky to have as many creature comforts as we have here in the US. The standard of living in many other areas of the world is quite different....

Wow! Two days in a row with sunshine! Things are drying up in my area -closed roads are starting to open. The rivers south of here wll crest on Wednesday - so keep your fingers crossed for those near the Rock and Crawfish rivers. For me it was just an inconvenience - hope everyone else who's wet fairs as well.

Thanks for thinking of us!
