Anyone have any experience with boutique skis?

We hear alot about the biggies: K2, Atomics, Volkl, etc. But what about the little guys? I know there are a few of them around, like Prior in British Columbia. Anyone know of or have any experience with any others? And what can you tell us about them?

The only boutique ski I have experience with is "the Ski". "The Ski" is a bump specific ski, and that is exactly what they love. I didn't get much of a chance to do bumps here until the end of the season, but when I did, and used "the ski" I really loved this ski.

It's light weight, nimble, and easy to manuver in the bumps. Gotta love a Boutique ski that does what its meant to do!!!

We have three pairs of PMGear BRO's in the garage. And just ordered two sets of Praxis skis.

I have 2 pairs of new straight skis whose brands I've never heard of. I'm not sure if they are boutique skis. Possibly they are skis for the Japanese market. One has a wood core and feels solid and sturdy, and the other model is lighter. They have distinctive, colorful graphics.

I have lent one pair to someone who needed straight skis.

I would be willing to try a boutique ski in the future since the current ski market has nothing that meets my needs.

i'm really interested in trying movement skis . . .
maybe next yr. i'll be more on it, and catch my local ski shops when they demo at the local hill :D

the other skis that appear interesting are made right here in the kootenays. they're called the "kootenay powder sticks" (or something like that . . . ) -- they actually make 3 or more different skis!

who knew?!?

i think there's a lot of potentiel for a "boutique" ski.

take prior, for example:
although i had a pretty weird experience while trying to try their skis out (the reps were super vague about the products and didn't seem super stoked on talking gear specs with me! . . . maybe they know more about the boards that skis?), apparantly they have an amazing online shop where you can custom build your own skis/boards, from bases to graphics . . . how cool is that?

i think there seems to be more opportunity to sort of specialize and customize with these smaller shops!

Update for me on this topic.
If you look at my quiver, there are only two skis that are "mass produced" The Blizzard SL and the Blizzard Eos.
The remainder of them are Boutique skis.
The ski(bump specific, narrow ish waist, short and nimble)
BlueHouse MR171 (First year run of this ski. Fun to play on but not well made. Needed a base grind before I could even ski them. I can see these dieing out early in their life)
Bro 174 Soft(One of the most well built skis I've had in my hands. Much stiffer than the Blue house, and a definite ski a diva would like to stay married to)

"The Claw" ski

This is a boutique ski that's made one town over from me. Supposedly has an amazing anti-vibration system. I've seen a few around the region - not that many.

Website:
https://www.clawskis.com/index_new.htm

There are tons of "little guys" out there - I had a list somewhere, can't put my brain on it right now but listed all ski manufacturers that distribute in the US. Will attempt to hunt down this list.

Even more "boutique" snowboard manufacturers.

I found the information and discussion about Anton Gliders, a new ski technology that will be coming out at the end of this year or next year. This is more than boutique skis but I and my husband defenitely want to demo this ski when they come out to the Tahoe area.

Yes, it is over $4K right now.
But they promised that the price will be $1800 when they start the mass productions (either this coming season or next season).

However, they have been taking their skis to various ski resorts so people can demo them. They also have been introducing their skis to ski instructors.
I am hoping that they bring their demo skis to Tahoe resorts this coming season. :-)

yeah I saw the Wagner website after reading this thread. Definately looks really cool, I am really interested in finding out more about them. The website quoted 1500$ as a base price plus extra for certain bases ect. You should also read their views on womens skis, they make an interesting argument for not forward mounting women on their skis. The choice of top sheets is amazing. I am struggling with justifying the cost though when I can buy everything else for so cheap... Anyone have these custom skis?

Thought I'd bump this up to see if anyone had any experiences this past season they'd like to share.

Wow, it looks like "theski" website is not working.
I just looked at some info on it a few months ago when it appeared that TheSki was coming out with a powder ski.

Bummer. :(

Im really impressed with Kastle, although I am not sure if you would consider them boutique since they used to be pretty mainstream but now not so much.

We visited the Prior factory last season and I demoed a set of skis while DH demoed a snowboard. The skis were not for me but I loved their little factory. The office was small and everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. The guy working even let 4yo DS help demonstrate how a split board works. It was also cool seeing them make skis and snowboards and I loved the idea that you can choose your topsheet and then watch them make your skis. They used local artists to design topsheets and they seemed pretty proud of that...they were all beautiful.
