Anyone had a ski house share?

What was your experience? How did you find out about it?

Just got to the Colorado area and I'm seeing comments about the heavy traffic up through the mountains on ski weekends. I'd love to find an affordable way to have local accommodation in summit county.

I haven't seen any references to ski shares in my google searches. Am I looking in the wrong place, using the wrong search, or just at the wrong time?

Lilabear, I'd share a house with you!:becky:
Sorry I don't have info for you, but I'll do some digging with some of the folks on Epic, and post here.

Another idea is to check with the ski resorts in the area. Somebody there may have some information about local ski houses.

Have you considered ski clubs? I don't know what it's like in Colorado, but here in the east some ski clubs have houses near ski areas, and offer really cheap accommodations to ski club members.

There is a club in Breckenridge called Schussbaumer. www.schussbaumer.org They have a house which sleeps 72 people (youth hostel style). They have a huge commercial kitchen, reading room and party room. It is right on the bus route so once you are there, you do not have to drive if you are skiing Breck. I was a member when I first moved to Colorado and met lots of people. It is a group environment which is not for everyone. I am an alumni member now since I bought a condo.

I would check Craigslist for other private party shares. I have seen some ads for ski house shares at REI in Denver and some of the local ski shops.

Schussbaumer sounds pretty cool! Kind of like a private Youth Hostle. A good way to meet folks, too!

All good pointers, thanks. I did look at the schussbaumer club, it's great to get an insight from an alumni as it's hard to tell exactly what the dynamics of the group are. They just changed the membership rules and I'll have to attend 5 events before they'll vote on whether they'd let me in or not. Here's where you find out if you're sociably acceptable or not.

Local ski resort contacts - a very good idea, I had not thought about that. And I know we have some local resort employees on the forum.

SnowHot - I'd share with you at the drop of a hat. I'm pretty sure you're going to sell me one in just a moment - btw I have ordered two powderfish neck gaiters and am awaiting delivery by post, plus my Hart skis. Maybe I shouldn't share with you ..... I'd be broke in no time, and the place would resemble the picture of the SnowHot Diva Kitteh who had too many toyz.

I know people that do this every year. In fact, several different groups.

It usually ends up to be ~ 16 people sharing the house and end up being ~ $200/month/person and that includes rent/utlities etc. First come/first serve on sleeping space. Seems to work out d/t different work schedules. 99% of the people I know that do this are nurses...so we do have weird schedules. Most of these people work together or know each other through extended networks. They usually allow "owners" to have guests for $30/night.

I have never done it because 99% of the rentals in the mountains don't allow dogs. And, I would want my dog with me. Isn't that funny??? Dog friendly mountain town, but not rentals!
