Anybody else working Christmas Eve/Day?

I'm working a 13-hour overnight shift in the E.R. Christmas Eve, when only the bizarre, the lonely, or those on the verge of death come in. For those of us here, it blows Christmas Eve as well as Christmas Day, and it's as if the day disappears unnoticed. Anybody else feeling put upon for their holiday duties?:(

I'm working Christmas Day at the ski shop, but that's a heck of a lot easier than a 13 hour overnight shift with the bizarre, the lonely, etc.

QQ, you get special points in heaven for all you do for the ill and injured. That, my friend, is the true spirit of Christmas.

Yup, Mr. SNWL (or is that Dr. SNWL) is a hospitalist and is working tomorrow too. He looks at it as a community service and that helps him feel better about it. Also, on the years when we have the kids, has been able to take the day off (though he works Thanksgiving Day on those years). All our kids are with their other parents tomorrow, so I'm going to the office to take care of year end administrative stuff. I worked a full day today and will on Wednesday, and then I shift hats to become mom/step-mom to 4 of our kids from Wednesday evening through New Year's Day.

That may, indeed, be the true spirit of Christmas, but something tells me it only counts if you're not pouting about it!

Well, have a happy holiday when you get off work then.

When I was a senior in high school, I was hoping to study medicine. But then my aunt, who's a doctor, said to me: "you know, if you become doctor, you'll have to work New Year's Eve, and all the holidays when everyone else is having fun!".

That, put an end to my aspiration to become a doctor! ;)

You know what they say (and this is serious):

"Better not pout, I'm telling you why......"

Heh QQ, I've spent too much time the last week at hospitals and doctor's offices to know that I don't appreciate your work. Last night, no this AM at 2:30 I had a different opinion of the medical profession. That said Dad's OK again, but I got 3 hours sleep. Work this AM and a nap at noon, and I'm ready to finish Christmas. Thank God I don't need to be anywhere till Jan 2, 2008

For those who are working through this holiday your efforts are appreicated, believe it and I thank you!!

A night shift that cuts into Christmas Eve and Day sure is tough. Maybe you'll get to do something to help someone tonight that will make it all worthwhile. Either way, I hope you and your husband have a wonderful Christmas evening together tomorrow!

Dang it! All your comments are making it no fun to pout anymore!!! But thanks for the appreciation, it's not often heard.

Alright, consider the attitude firmly adjusted! I've got a smile on my face and am happy to be at work doing what I love.

(I'm really into the smilies tonight......)

Yes, I've worked either Christmas day or eve & sometimes both for 25 yrs. What makes it better is if you are working with a few people that are also your friends and if there is good food & snacks to enjoy together in between duties. Or at least some homemade Christmas cookies & punch.

same here

DH is working, Sat-today, and as of last night when he got in at 8:30 p.m., he had already put in 44 hours. I call him a "doctor" with 5 patients (he is an engineer who works on mega-large machines to keep them going). At least he's off starting tomorrow.....hats off to all those who give up their holiday(s).

So, QQ, how'd your shift in the ER go? My husband left the house at 8:45 am and returned at 7:30 pm and didn't have a break.... He sure was glad to get home!

I am back again after a bit of absense. I miss this place !
I too worked right through Christmas. 24th, 25th, and 26th all shifts started very early in the morning. I work in a hospital as well. Each day was quite busy, but I got to spend some of the time with people that I work with and really like and appreciate. I also felt quite good about serving the patients that were also unable to be home with family and friends....some patients have no where else to go....
We had pot luck two days in a row !!! Woo hoo, we love the food at work !!! QQ.....I do make it to the ER for different duties with my job, and can certainly appreciate the work that you do! I am sure that what you do in a shift can vary, from wonderful and fulfilling to downright scary! The fact that someone is there willing to handle all of that is truly awesome.

Don't hate me....

I worked Christmas day---as a mountain host at Solitude---greeting the Christmas skiers. It was a relatively quiet day, enabling me to sneak a few tree shots off Powderhorn.

Hosting post-Christmas was crazy--real chaos--as skiers who ski but once a year/decade showed up all at once to buy passes, rent skis, get lessons. It was NUTS.

Quiver Queen---and others who had real jobs on the holiday---thank you for your service. When I was a hospital nurse, many years ago, I remember how it felt to trudge into work on holidays.

I worked both Christmas and Boxing Day (which is also a stat holiday here) and as Tues & Weds are my 'Regular Scheduled Off' days, I take the OT in lieu and defer the stats, for 5 more ski days!!!! Yay! :ski2:
