Ski Divas, we have a lady who dropped out from our Hokkaido / Japow group trip from 8-22 Feb 2025. I have several guys interested to snatch up the spot, but I'd prefer passing it to a woman - however, they are so hard to find!!

Please DM me if you are interested. You will need at least intermediate backcountry skills. Splitboards are ok, as well.

Cost: USD 3,200 for 15 days / 14 nights, accommodation in modern lodges with spa, guiding, 1 catski day and all ground transportation included. We are a rad group from all corners of Europe and US/Canada, 80% male, 20% female. We get together globally to enjoy the finest powder skiing in the world together. Hoping to tilt the male/female balance towards more females in the future! ❤️

Hi freeskigal,
I just signed after meeting Wendy last weekend. I know it is probably too late for this trip. If not, do you have room for me and my husband. Wanting to do some Japow. Is this all skinning and backcountry or lifts with guiding and some hiking and skinning? Cathleen

Hi Cathleen, thank you for getting in touch. I promised a friend to hold the last spot until the end of next week. Unfortunately it's only 1 spot left, so if it's two of you, I will not be able to accommodate unless we have another dropout (I do not exclude this possibility). If that were the case and my friend gives me a negative, I'd be happy to contact you again! The trip is a mix of backcountry, catskiing and lift assisted freeride.

Hi FSG,
We are in if you get another drop-out. Both my husband and I absolutely would love this trip.

Send me an email to [email protected] - I'd be happy to stay in touch. If it doesn't work for this season, I will arrange another trip in 2026, and start planning around May/June 2025. I will for sure let you know ahead of time so we can reserve your and your husband's spots!

I'd be really interested in getting in on this as well - do you always go to Japan, or change it up every year ?
Hi @shredbetty, I go to Japan every season. We've also tried more exotic locations such as Argentina, Chile, Kashmir, Georgia and North Macedonia.

I've been gathering groups for these trips for the last few seasons on a non profit basis, and have built a really cool community with core group members who meet on a regular basis. It's so much more fun not having to shred alone. Send an email to [email protected] and I'm happy to take you up on my list!

@freeskigal what's the skill required for this trip? I'm comfortable in blue but still working on black :D
You need to be comfortable riding off-piste in deep powder, and have backcountry experience (putting skins on and off within max. 10 minutes, be able to climb up to 3,000 feet per day, know avalanche safety procedures and how to handle safety equipment such as beacon, shovel, probe).

I am comfortable going uphill and had done AIARE 1 and backcountry trip but I don’t have any experience in riding in Deep powder . I’m trying to get experience on that. Any recommendations on how one can get experience riding in deep powder to prep for Japan?
How steep are the terrain the group usually go? 30 degree like black run here?

The challenge of Japan's terrain is not so much the steepness, but the tree wells and creeks you can fall into, especially due to the bad visibility since it snows a lot. It's a different kind of danger. Most runs are below 30-35 degrees, so avalanche risk is quite manageable - doesn't mean it never happens, though.

I'd suggest you try skiing beside the pistes to start with on deep powder days, and slowly venture out further once you feel more comfortable. As long as the powder is fresh and untracked, you don't need a lot of technique; it gets hairy when it's tracked out (challenge to your balance) or has a breakable crust - alhtough the latter doesn't happen a lot in Japan. Maybe take a freeride coach for a day or two to get some valuable tips what you can improve.

@freeskigal keep me on your future list. As an avid backcountry skier with over a decade of experience (averaging about 50 days per season), skiing in the backcountry of Japan has been on my bucket list. My husband usually does not want to travel to backcountry ski since we have great backcountry skiing in our backyard (the Wallowa Mountains). I have my Aiare 2 and my gear all dialed. Keep me posted on future trips!
