Any brewmistresses out there?

It's finally that time of year when it's cool enough to boil gallons of water for hours at a time - beer brewing season! As of last weekend, we have 5 gallons of Scottish Ale and 5 gallons of Blueberry Wheat fermenting in the basement.

Anybody else out there into brewing their own? Beer, wine, mead??

I'd like to be, but we don't have the room. I feel like "brewmistress" has a lot of potential as a halloween costume, though... ;)

Hubby and I do wine, but at a brew-by-you. So it's not the same as brewing in your basement. They have all the stuff and do all the work except the bottling. Also we don't do any red's. Can't stand them! So its usually a batch of Chardonnay and one of Zin! I have about 25 wineries within a 20 min drive. So I can be picky about the home brew stuff!

I actually did that 2 years ago. I dressed up like St Pauli Girl!

Brewing doesn't take much room - you just need a gas burner, a big pot, and a sink (in other words, a kitchen), a shower or bathtub to wash out your buckets and carboys, and a dark closet to store your beer in while fermenting.

We collected maple sap for a friend of ours who is brewing a " Sugar Shack" ale. Last year's was like drinking 3 beers in one, but it went down smooth!

I'm waiting until I'm 'legal', but I can't wait to brew my own. I've got a friend who brews, he just finished a "black cherry stout". It was delicious. I mean... it sounds delicious.... *sigh*

mmmmmmm..... Blueberry Wheat sounds wonderful. Can't wait to taste it!!

It is tempting to try. But then again, all Craig drinks is PBR. Got a recipe for that?

Ironically, PBR and other light lagers are some of the hardest beers to brew. If we had a lagering fridge, you know we'd be getting that recipe dialed!

I'm thinking of attempting a batch of wine this winter since I've never tried it. I've finally gathered enough bottles for a batch, and I think it would be fun - I've heard it's pretty simple. Nothing like 5 gallons of cheap-ass homemade wine sitting in the basement!

Have any of you tasted honey mead? I made a batch of apple cider mead 2 years ago, and it's starting to really hit its peak. Stuff will knock you out if you're not careful - gravity readings put this one at 11%!!

You're legal here in Ontario @ 19:smile:

We never brewed our own beer, but we did make wine!

I can remember back to when I was 10/12 years old and my dad made wine from grapes. It was such a longgg process, not to mention, attracted many bees from all of the sweet tasting grapes!!! It was a lot of work as I used to help him check the demijons (sp?) to make sure they were sitting at the right temperature. My fav part, however, was transferring the finished wine from the demijons (sp?) to the small glass gallons (not sure of the proper term on these) or to wine bottles. We stopped making it from scratch though, just because it was very time consuming. I should also add, he never added anything to the wine like sugars or chemicals to treat it. It was 100% pure, homemade wine.

We did make wine a few years back, though, but made it from ready made juice. What an easier process!!! (And still rewarding!)

Ahh, the memories:D
