And they say skiing is dangerous...

Well, I've skied over 100 times the last couple of years with no major falls or injuries. But leave it to me....I did a major face plant yesterday in front of Safeway. Walking too fast, getting my keys out of the purse to beep the car open, not paying attention enough at the edge of the curb, and down I went. Knee hit first, then caught myself more with my left hand, but it wasn't enough to stop me and my chin then hit the curb with a big cracking noise and a deep gash that was bleeding nicely. So I got a little visit to the emergency room and I came out with 5 stitches under my scraped up chin area. My jaw felt like it was tweaked, still not sure it isn't (sore and hard to chew right now), my right knee hurts a little (scraped even thru my jeans and it feels bruised), and my left palm is very sore. Luckily, no muscles or joints anywhere were hurt, not even my neck thank goodness. I've actually very grateful that it wasn't worse (like a totally wrecked knee, sprained or broken wrist or thumb, and instead of a cut chin I might have hit my forehead...yikes!). So I'm lucky I came out of this as well as I did! So in about a week I expect to be back up there skiing, if this stupid California spring like weather will stop wrecking the snow.

But I think it's so funny that something like this didn't happen skiing!!! I've noticed I always have these dopey little accidents when I'm moving fast, carrying stuff, and not paying attention.:injured:

Ouch! Funny to think that you're lucky coming out of it with only the injuries you have, but I think you're right.

Heal fast.

Ow! Sorry that happened...it always seems to be silly things like that that happen to me, too.

Keep an eye on your jaw, and if it's not getting better, find yourself a good PT who specializes in TMJ!

I agree with you about the risks of slick surfaces in shoes versus skis. After all, skis are way longer, and if comfortable on them it takes a little longer for the balance to be lost than a misstep in a lot or on the sidewalk.

Similar to you, after logging in a hundred days in one season, went rollerblading, put my sneakers back on to walk to lunch, and slipped on perfectly clear ice in the shade (invisble). After MRI's, all sorts of injections and two years away from climbing I could finally use my shoulder without pain.

One month after climbing again, I went cross country skiing and tore it up again. The point being that alpine skiing can be very safe, and fortunately requires mostly healthy lower body appendages.

Hope you heal up fast.

Sorry about the slip & fall. I agree that we do some of the worst damage doing "stupid" things. Back in high school, I tore the ligaments in my left ankle just stepping wrong off the curb.
The cuts on the face are the worst for bleeding. I saw plenty of them when I was an official at our skeleton races. They can be tiny cuts, but they can gush pretty good. If you didn't get instructions on wound care for that one on your chin, be sure to ask for them. You might be able to minimize the scarring. I'm glad to hear that the "chin bite" was the worst of your damage. Quick healing!

I hope you heal quickly! You are right, sometimes it is doing the regular stuff when we get hurt. A couple of years ago I broke my hand because I tripped over a case of bottled water while I was carrying my laundry basket. I caught myself with my hand, but I broke my hand (from hitting the corner of the wall at the entrance to my dining room.

Glad your injuries weren't worse!

I can so relate to this thread. I got back last week from 4 days of skiing in SLC. I seem to always have a few falls, but I emerged with only a few bruises on my outer thighs.
So three days later, taking out my recycling, I slip on ice on the driveway and fracture my patella. Several friends have commented on the irony.

How are you feeling now?

Not sure if this is addressed to me or to the OP, but I am doing well, thank you. Pain has lessened a great deal, but I have to keep my leg fully extended in a brace. So I know there will be scar tissue and weak muscles to work on in 6 to 8 weeks. You gals be careful out there! :p

OMG! Who thought Safeway could be more dangerous than the slopes. How are you feeling now? :boxing:

Update...I'm doing well. The stitched up chin healed pretty well, although there is still a sort of bump there (don't know what that is...) and it's fairly sensitive, but at least you can't see the cut because it enough under the chin that I have to raise my head up to see it. My jaw felt tweaked at first, but it's totally fine now. My sore hand is also fine. I didn't ski for a week, but I'm back at it full force now.

Oh yeah....I'm being REALLY REALLY careful walking around in my daily life. No more stupid falls/injuries, please! :eyebrows:

You know, from experience, that takes ALL the fun out of it.

I am, through and through, a genuine klutz. I've broken toes just by twirling, fingers while washing potatoes (seriously don't ask on that one), a concussion from the bathroom sink, shattered tailbone skateboarding in a motor home, broken arm & dislocated fingers in a parking lot, stitches from trimming flowers, and more cuts / bruises / breaks / fractures than I have time to relate right now ... I've broken or fractured almost every bone in my body at one time or another & had stitches at least 10 times ... and only ONE of those was the result of a major accident (shattered kneecap while skateboarding in Poland, have a prosthetic implant in it's place).

Almost all of my injuries are an unexpected result of some mundane activity, but I wouldn't give anything up to avoid them. I enjoy it all, every moment, and I'll happily deal with the recovery because without it I wouldn't be justified in laughing until I cry about how clumsy I am.

Consequently, my teenage son thinks I'm right up there with the guys from JackA$$. I've overheard him a few times with things like "Oh yeah? Welll this one time my mom was ...!"

I also have some great stories to make people giggle. :D

Late to the party on this one, but  so sorry to hear this! Life.....alas, have my share of  moments, including a similar recycling mishap last fall. One day quite a few years ago, after a full day of freestyle jumps and park rails, my son was knocked out cold/unconscious after a fall on sidewalk ice in his street shoes (complete with ambulance transport and that "wonderful" mom-panic-inducing call from ER personnel).

Either heard or read once, not sure which, that the leading cause of ACL rupture is people stepping off curbs. :noidea:

Hope all injured parties are feeling better soon!
