Analysis Skills vs. Personal Technique

Ever since I moved to Colorado, I sometimes attend Bob Barnes Tuesday Movement Analysis Sessions

I have discovered that my movement analysis skills are actually much better than my actual skiing skills. I:o In other words, I can tell skiers who are much better than I am what their flaws are.

Are your technical skills better than your analysis skills?

I'm not good at MA at all!
Tcarey tried so hard to get me to see things she sees in ski video, but I Just didn't get the hang of it.:(
As for Bob Barnes........I'm not speaking to him, because he ditched me at A Basin......so there.;)

As for personal technique. I have an idea of how awesome I look, then I see video of myself and I can totally see my flaws. :(

I think I do.

But I keep my mouth tightly shut!

Nothing irritates more than someone offering unsolicited opinion, especially that "someone" doesn't even do it right! The fastest way to lose a skiing buddy. :(

I think it depends on the person...I love getting feedback!

I keep my mouth shut on the slopes. But at the Tuesday MA groups in Summit County, I sometimes amaze people when I tell the that I don't actually teach skiing.

To clarify, one of the things you need to do to get a sport fitness certification is observe video of a somewhat ideal version of any sport. Then, when you are working with a recreational athlete, you can analyze how they deviate, and what muscular imbalances are contributing to less than excellent technique.

Hm. I know my motion analysis skills for rowing are way stronger than my techinical skills; I was a cox/coach for a decade and have rowed maybe three times in my life. I don't think I've consciously thought about it for other sports.

Not being an instructor for anything anymore, I actually don't care terribly much about how others look when doing a physical endeavor, other than thinking, "That must've hurt" or "That does not look efficient." I do cringe when I see poor rowers, though.

But usually from a BETTER skier, isn't it?

Actually I love getting feedback period. However, if it is from someone that doesn't ski better than me I will give it a bit more thought &/or consult with someone else about the same thing.

I too keep my mouth shut when skiing with friends unless asked. Being an instructor is not always a good thing. I like to think that my movement analysis is good, but sometimes I look at students and wonder just what the "H" is wrong. As for skiing, I always like input. I was skiing the Sunday after Easter and friend who has a higher instructor level than mine pointed out to me a small problem. Great idea, but why the last day of skiing!!

This was probably one of the toughest parts of the PSIA exam process.I think it is really easy to see ineffcient movements ie: stem, step, skidding etc but the hard part is determining the cause!Just as we go to the doctor when we are sick-well yeah we know we are sick! But why? I feel the effects of my illness but what is the cause?

So when we analyze skiers we need to Observe,Describe and then Prescribe -just like the doc's do!
