Ladies,
I know many of you have been skiing for years, so this may be boring - but this is my first real year of skiing and I just wanted to share...
I woke up to rain in Munich - I drove in rain to Garmisch, I got soaked walking from my car to the ski school - needless to say I did not have high hopes for a great day - but I take my lessons each week no matter what. Well, my instructor and I got off of the Gondola up top and it was snowing hard! Better yet, we were practically alone since most people must have decided to enjoy the rainy Sunday under the covers.
So - after a few runs of drills and some mogul practice, my instructor took me WAY off-piste into the trees! Now for most of you this is a daily event, but it was my first time. Powder, trees, and steep!
My instructor seemed happy with me, but I fell a LOT - and found out how hard it can be to FIND a ski in the powder, let alone to get it back on - or to climb up a steep powdery slope to retrieve it.
After a while we went back to moguls - which I finally started to figure out today (barely - a long way to go yet), then hard carving. At one point we ran into a synchronized skiing team. I had no idea this event existed. My instructor said he was on a team in the past and - upon prompting - showed me some cool tricks. (I'd never seen someone spin around on the tips of their skis with the tails high in the air...)
After my lesson was over, and I was left to my own devices, I realized the amateur race course that is roped-off on the side of the main trail was empty - no flags but no sentry either (remember it was really empty today). I could not resist. I sort of made up my own course - pretend flags in my head - catching real air a few times times and actually landing on my two skis and not on my butt!
Next, on the bunny slope, I successfully managed some slow 360s on the snow and for the first time even a 180 jump turn or two.
Then, as due to lack of snow on the lower trails no one can ski down, I took off my skis, got in the Gondola and rode back to the bottom.
AWESOME! I love this sport!
