After Christmas Dinner Traditions

I was just having a conversation with my in-laws, regarding after Christmas dinner games. Depending on which side of the family we're visiting we either play Rummoli or Euchre after dinner.

These are somewhat old traditional Canadian games and I was wondering, does anyone else's family play games after Christmas dinner? If so, what do you play? Does anyone else play Rummoli or Euchre too?

Usually what ever came under the tree that year. Actually we never really played any games after dinner as there was usually snow at my grandmothers or my uncle's farm and we went ski-dooing

Looks like that kind of Christmas this year. As long as that "R" doesn't happen on Sunday!!

Pictionary and Cranium! (My brother and sister-in-law stink at both of them!) :D

When I was a kid, we'd play Canasta at my great grandmother's house after holiday dinners.

These days, we live so far away, we just ski and hang out with friends on Christmas!

When I was a kid (a long time ago!) our family tradition was to play games on Christmas Eve. Favourites were Parcheesi, Rumoli, Monopoly - my parents always let us choose what we wanted to play.

New favourites now are Cranium. My husband isn't into games, but when we go up to my family cottage that's usually how we spend our evenings. We always make sure all ages can play, so we train them early !! Cards are a big hit too.

Loads of fun.....families just don't seem to do enough of that now.

Oh my God . . . Canasta.
In my family we all play Canasta, and learning how to play is a rite of passage . . . just ask Lilgeorg! Anyway, as soon as a kid could hold the 15 cards in their hands, they were learning Canasta.

The best is when my son and I both got on Yahoo Games. We were sitting next to each other with our individual laptops. We joined a group playing partners, and we were each others' partners . . . yet because we were sitting next to each other in the same room, we could see each others' hands. So, yes, we cheated!

We still play Canasta all the time . . . and once, I beat Lilgeorg with a score in the 9000's range!

True...True.. I hang my head in shame. Lola beat me at canasta by over 7,000 points. My hubby and I play a game almost every night just to keep the old brain cells working.

Canasta is also a way to connect with family members. We have solved lots of thorny problems over a game of canasta. It causes you to sit down with another and look face to face and talk. Works great!

I don't have any family. Just DH and son. DH is working holiday duty at his regular job, probably 12 hours each day, and prodigal son lives 2000+ miles away and is also working. At least I have skiing - and new friends like all of you  Have a lovely holiday.

Whenever I was alone on Christmas (working). I'd throw one of these in the microwave for Christmas Dinner.

Canasta! My grandmother and I would play Canasta for hours & hours. We'd play the joker version. A joker canasta with 4 jokers and 3 two's was worth 1000 points. It was rare but fun when you got it.

I've since tried software, but it was much more fun with my grandmother!

I don't do Christmas, but I sure do games! Scrabble is a personal favorite, but pictionary, taboo, scattergories, apples to apples, cranium hoopla (never played the original cranium, but hoopla's fun) etc are great for a group.

I have a friend who grew up playing Euchre with his family (Midwestern farmland). I'd never heard of it before he told me about it. Asking around, I found that nobody from in my social circle knew it, but suburbanites and others that I've met traveling play it. :noidea:

Euchre, you betcha! Michigan Rummy, and Beer Pong!! (Just kidding!) Lol! We ski if there is snow, or in no snow years, we do a trail ride. Lots of orange ribbon for the last few Deer Hunters out there. When your on a brown horse in the woods "Blaze orange" is your new favorite fashion color!
