Advice on new skis?

Hi All,
I'm a newbie to the group, but a longtime avid reader of your posts (love this board!). I need a new pair of skis and there's a lot of choices out there. I once worked in a ski shop, so I know better than to trust the average sales guy -- I need some info from chicks who ski. I've skied since little kidhood, and I guess I'd call myself an advanced, fairly technical skier. I ski 90%+ groomers, most often in Vermont and Canada so I need a ski that likes ice and hardpack and is stable at higher speeds. My last ski? Okay...this is embarassing...I'm the last woman still on pencil skis...Rossi 7XK 198's. I loved them for the big GS turns, but I had to work hard to haul those things around in the bumps. They were probably too long and I'm now looking for something lighter and softer under the boot. I'm 5'8", 130 lbs. I'm having a hard time finding skis I want to demo at Okemo. One shop set me up with the Volkl AC20 (163's)-- I didn't want to marry 'em. I didn't research before renting -- I was renting for my son and just took what the Volkl shop offered. Suggestions anyone? Fuego? Burnin Luv? Olympia FireFox? Am I way off base? I'd be thrilled to find something from last season...

I'm a newbie as well and not up on all my technical ski terms, so not sure how much use I can be but I think you're a similar level of skier and ski on similar stuff as me so hopefully i can help!I'm about 5'5" and 120 lbs

I just recently bought k2 burnin luvs and although I havent had them properly out yet, at the demo their grip and speed amazed me. I was carving like ive never done before! Definately a good choice for hard snow and ice in my opinion.

I was also recommended the dynastar exclusive legends (on this site)and I think theyre a bit better off piste but I found they didnt grip as well as the burnin luvs.

I would have also liked to have demoed the Fischer vision 70/73/breeze but didnt get the chance. It was also highly recommended on this site though.

Rossi 7XK's, great ski in its time, but its time has come and gone. (Were they the green ones, or white?) You might like the Rossi Z5's, but lots shorter. I went from 190's to 154's. The Firefox yeah. Also check demo reviews in the gear section. Some of us got to demo this years stuff last year. And if you are at Okemo we know a good shop to see - don't we Diva's??

I bought the Fuego this year and love them. Great on ice, stable, and went through cut up ungroomed with ease. I also liked the Firefox, although I think I would have liked them better in 162 rather than the 154 that I demoed. I demoed the Burnin' Luv a couple of years ago and didn't like them at all (maybe the only woman on the planet that doesn't).

Thanks for the feedback, all. My 7Xk's are the purple ones -- I think they came out the year after the white ones. It would've been...I dunno...more than 10 years ago (!!) Jilly -- you mentioned a shop you like at Okemo. Which one? I think we're heading to Vt next weekend and I may demo the Fuegos, since I can find those!

I just got a pair of Sugar Mamas (Atomics) and can't say enough about them for the groomers. Are there any other Divas out there who are on the Mamas?

The ski shop at my local resort carry them as demo package rentals and said they have a high 'sell' rate after women try them out.

I LOVE them for the groomers/hard pack days. Divas seem to really like Volkls and Burnin Luvs----but I don't hear much about the Sugar Mamas.

New Year's Day I skied with SkiMave and she was on the Sugar Mama's. I was watching the way the ski acted and made a decision that I need to try that ski. Atomic has a demo day at our local hill soon, if not I'll use my "free" demo day voucher at Tremblant.

The FireFox is a great ski. I demoed it and absolutely loved it. And I hear terrific things about the Fugeos. Northern Ski Works in Ludlow, VT, carries Volkls. Maybe they have a pair there you can try.

You say you want to demo at Okemo. The base ski shop offers Stockli skis for demo. I haven't tried them. but I hear they're great for east coast skiing. You may want to give them a try, too.

Thanks all! I like Northern Ski WOrks at Okemo -- that's where I rented the AC20's & they have the Fuegos available for demo. One of my friends loves, loves, loves his Stockli's...he has a similar (but better) style as me. I'll give 'em a try. Thanks again!

A Legend is Born!

If you have a chance to demo Dynastar Exclusive Legend and Exclusive Carve, you should. I have Legends... not as quick as I might have liked at first, but versatile, smooth, uber grippy for smooth turns. Carves I hear are totally zippy and come highly recommended for serious speed on the groomers.

For me, with the new skis, some serious canting work on skis/boots (Lange Exclusive 100), I have for the first time since I've been skiing -- about 8 short years -- I have felt what instructors mean to "carve" my turns. WOOHOO!
