Advertising and skiing

Have you been to a resort where they have ads on the lift pylons, so you can read them as you head up the mountain? How do you feel about that? Does it bother you or do you think it's no big deal?

I mean, I understand they're trying to make money. And the people on the lift are a ready, captive audience. But honestly, I think it really detracts from the outdoor experience. I'd rather spend more on a lift pass than have to see these things.

Any thoughts?

Advertising at Ski Resorts

I agree with you Ski Diva. One of the great things about skiing is being outdoors and enjoying the wonderful views. I would also pay more not to have to look at advertising.

I don't like it either. It is tacky. It looks bad on management, too, like they'll do anything to make another buck off their captive customers. It shows no respect.

To make matters worse, I've actually seen one of these ads (I think for Mountain Dew) with a spelling/usage error! It uses "you're" instead of "your". Pretty bad!

At what resorts have you seen these types of billboards? I'm not sure that I've seen them, but it sounds icky and annoying.

You know, I'm having a brain freeze here. :o I just know I've seen them on a few lifts at a couple places. Wherever they are, they're not a good idea.

When I learned to ski, they had signs on the poles with portions of the responsibility code. Its funny but I recall every one of those.

I would really like to see that happen again. Some may never read them but, on occasion, someone beginning may actually look, read, and implement the responsibility code in his/her skiing lifestyle.

Me too! How funny, they use to have them on the towers at Bridger when I was a kid, they advertised for the ski school etc. I always remember the one at the bottom that said, ametuers who take lessons from amatuers become ametuers, take lessons from a pro..
I never forgot that one because I didn't know at first what an amatuer was... I finally had to look it up in the dictionary. It was intriguing as a child.

Never seen them.

It sounds tacky. It also distract novices from reading "skier responsibility code", too. I mean, if there're tons of ads, beginers will simply ignore ALL the stuff on the lift towers. Expect more beginer NOT raise their safety bars because they ignore signs telling them to do so?

I forget where I was, but somewhere had a lift map on the bar that you drop down. I liked that cause you could look at it while you were riding up. That one might have had a 'sponser ad' type of thinger, but I didn't mind it cause I was just looking at the map and didn't have to worry about taking off my mittens to unfold the one in my pocket!

Yeah, I like that myself for the same reason. I think I remember seeing them at Snowmass.

We have them at Tremblant, but they are strictly resort ads. Upcoming events and the skier's responsibility code. Last year they did start to advertise the new condo's and all the new development they were hoping to do on the Versant Soliel. None advertise for a particular product. There are banners in the main lodge that some companies are "official partners" and you should buy their brand. But then again you can't buy the competition brand because its not there.
ie only Coke, no Pepsi!

One of my friends actually reads those ads in the lifts, and suddenly burst out laughing one time we sat in the lift.

The ad was of a Coke bottle, and the text read: Powder to the people.

I don't think they thought this ad through before they went through with it...

I think having the responsibility code visible while on the lift is a good idea. A lot of people don't take the 5 seconds to read it on their own, and sticking it somewhere they can see while their butt is plastered to a chair seems like it would up the chances of them knowing the responsibility code.

Ut oh. Here comes my legal work jargon.

The US Forest Service does not allow advertising on our lifts or poles because they basically consider it "tacky." It's not the route they want to go.

So I wonder where these resorts lie (with the Coke ads & such) I doubt they're on USFS land...

There was a big debate about that with our trail maps on the safety bars and the advertising we were allowed to put on there. Basically it's skier safety issues, tips and Aspen logos & such. But no product promotion was allowed. This pissed of the "inventor" of this idea, because it basically made it FAR less lucrative of an idea.

Couldn't believe how much of this I saw when I viewed my son's pictures from Argentina last summer. Also quite a bit of advertising in some places in the Alps as well (from what I've seen of others' photos). Maybe we'll hear from some of our overseas friends on this? Bugged me when it first started. I don't see much if any of it in the east.

I don't like the idea of advertising an the lift poles...However, I did like the trail maps on the pull down bars at Aspen and Crested Butte. I would take a little advertising on those for the convenience it offers! The ads on the ski racks also help me remember where I put my skis...here it seems to be alcohol or pain reliever ads:wink: . I doubt the ads on the lift poles would translate into cheaper lift tickets anyway!

skigirl27, No ads at Tremblant could be the same reason - Park land, in this case Provinical park land, so no adverts!
