A really bad start to the year.

So, am I just being a wussy this year?

I've had 2 easy rides on the SS this year. Just some swoopy singletrack with only the tiniest of log piles (maybe a foot high?), and I was feeling pretty good. On Saturday, hubby says he wants to go to Greenville to ride (one of my very favorite places), so I'm a happy camper. I'm figuring he'll go to the Shearer Rd trail which is a flowing 4.5 miler with a couple of larger log piles, 2 rock gardens, 1 skinny, 1 log skinny, and a couple of bridges. Instead, he chooses Edwards Creek. So, for my first ride on the FS bike for the year, I get 7 miles of trecherous up-and-down-hill switchbacks, huge log piles, a big off-camber TeePee, a Teeter Totter, several scary bridge crossings, some side-hill and tree-squeeze action, bermed BMX-style and other generally scary stuff.

I by-pass the first couple of scary things but manage to crash anyway. I manage to over heat (it's only 74 deg out!) and have an asthma attack within the first 4 miles. Finally, I decide to do Danger TeePee, having done it successfully probably 5-10 times last year. Instead, I miss the off-camber part and drop off the back side face-first from about 4 feet up. Now sporting a black eye, a cool nose bridge bruise that follows the nose piece of my sunglasses, a fat and bloody lip, and a scraped and bloody nose and cheek, I manage to chicken out of everything else for the remainder of the 7 mile ride.

At this point, I'm almost afraid to ride my FS. :( Is this just normal early season jitters? Is anyone else feeling a little confidence lacking this early in the season? Or am I just being a sissy-woosy?

Any tips on how to get my "Grrrrr" back?

K, I don't know how you got your Bike Jones going at all. I'm really struggling to get my gears switched, and have only JUST checked the tires.
I did, however, hit a few balls yesterday. I suck at golf too. :(

Like they say - get back on that horse and ride. So get out really soon and ride something with smaller features and work yourself up. Just like the first day of skiing. You don't try the double black first!! You start on the blues or even the greens!!

Go for it, you'll do it, maybe next month, try that trail again!

You are way more hardcore than I am, that's for sure!

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. You probably had a bit of a funk day, like we get in skiing. It will come to you!

When I can't seem to find my groove, I pick some of the easy fun trails in town, ride them as fast as I can and just try to get comfortable again.

I has one season where after a bad crash I spent about a month on jeep roads. So be kind to yourself.

I also have bad days that really relate to my cycle...

Having broken my arm the first bike weekend of the season....

Don't think twice, just get back on it. The only way to mentally get past your hesitancy is to log lots of time in the saddle. Do some confidence-building trails that you're really familiar with and then get after it again!

I personally can't wait to get back on my bike, even after breaking two bones Crashes and injuries are kind of just part of the game, and you can't be too hard on yourself.

Funny you should say that..... Surprise!

Thanks ladies. Maybe it was just a bad day. Definitely, the A-Basin trip was in the back of my mind the whole time, plus it was just shy of 1 year ago that I did "the big owie" at the Shearer Rd trail. :(

Maybe I'll take the FS out to our local easy trails and just get used to riding her again. She DOES handle differently than the super-light SS.

Yeah, that happens. Go back to a trail you feel confident on and work on getting back in the groove there. It'll snap back and you'll start to feel ready for the tougher stuff again before long. But don't be too hard on yourself. It happens to everyone!

Never let it phase you, just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, take a day... and then do it again!

BTW, how's the eye??

The eye is fine and the nose and lip are peeling already. However, the bruise across the bridge of my nose makes wearing my regular glasses a b*tch!

My inaugural ride for the 2008 season was last night with Volklgirl. She can tell you how shocked I was/we were, when Mr SnowHot said, "can I go along with you girls?"

Okay, on to my freak out stuff. I was cruising along, knowing full well that the ONE hill was gonna kick my butt like it always does. ARGH!!!
But feeling like I was doing great for my first ride of the season. Mr SH went ahead, (dumb since he didn't know the trail, but that's just the way he is)
So, he missed the turn for one of the funnest sections of the trail. Dummy!!!
That is when I had my panic moments. Okay, I didn't really panic, but I was definitely not on the same wave I was at the end of the 2007 season. Wrong pedal stroke going over logs, foot down when approaching tight trees, ARGH!!! I was soooooooo over that last year.
Rest assured, I'll get it back.
Life is freakin awesome!! Thanks for the ride K!!!

Last night was a blast  . You need to drag him along every week. Let's just say I was amazed :brick: :faint: .

I'm sorry I gave you grief - you did fine for your first day out  .

Just got back from an awesome ride! Still have the adrenalin going... broke a chain, resulting in a couple big lumpy bruises and a lovely chain ring bite. :boxing: Yet, it was all worth it! Thank goodness I carry the chain tool and a spare piece of chain. Otherwise we would have missed out on the best part of the ride!

Can relate to Vokl's shyness afterwards... we had to come back through the piece of trail that I broke my chain and tumbled backward on and just wasn't recovered mentally yet... had to take an alternate route.. sniff, but rest of ride was awesome!

Woohoo!
