A New Diva Move!

While I was at Liberty over the weekend there was this young girl with a group of people who I met and did a few runs with. She and I were waiting for the guys down at the bottom of the lift for what seemed like forever. And ya know how sometimes a Diva gets tired of standing and just wants to sit down. I glance over at this young girl who is maybe 11 or 12 and she's sitting on the tails of her skiis. Feet still in boot, boot still in binding!

I am like wow that looks comfy let me try that. Well I tried it and :faint: it wasn't pretty. After struggling to get down there I then laid back, now that was really comfortable. However, I could not get up without assistance. I work out, I have strong legs and core. At least I was under the impression I did.

Does anyone know if there is a system to doing this Diva move with ease? Or at 42 I should just forget about doing such things. :noidea:

I used to do that when I was a little girl.....now.....my leg, thigh, butt, arm, oblique and brain muscles tell me I've outgrown that stance!

I'm 40, and I'll still attempt it......so I just have to be okay with looking like a fool! YEAH FOR ME! :D

The biomechanics of most adults just doesn't allow for that move. But we have teen ski racers who do it all the time. It hurts my knees just to watch.

Yeah, I attribute it to the four knee surgeries, but I used to do that as a kid and now I think my knees would explode.

I have not even attempted that in years! I remember even getting into that position when I would straightline the runout at the bottom of some blue slopes at the resort I learned at as a kid.

Both of my knees swelled up after just reading this thread ...

Actually, both times I tweaked my knees last season had to do with getting into a squat. Once was on purpose (dumbbbbbbb) while ducking a rope (in a lift line, not a boundary) ... the other was one of those PLUNK moments that I fought my way out of (probably just should have fallen; normally I do).

My knees hurt reading this, too - and my back. If I were you, I'd just invent an even cooler move that only you can pull off!

I can still do it (I'm 26), but it's definitely not as easy as it once was. Getting down isn't the problem, but getting up puts some serious pressure on my knees. I should probably just quit doing it while I'm still ahread. ;)

Yes, you should have just fallen. I work in the world of biomechanics (although that's not my expertise) and someone handed me an article last year on skier knee injuries. It said that the majority of knee injuries in ski injuries are actually caused when someone tries to recover from a fall rather than from the fall itself.

Yes, and I'm well aware of that. This particular case, though, I had a line of skiers behind me ... Epic bears, in fact. We were cutting over to a different run, so no one was turning. I started tipping over (on the downhill side) b/c I wasn't paying attention ... I truly would have gone down, except I knew that the people right behind me were trying to gain speed, and I was more scared of being run over or causing a pileup than anything else at that point.

The skier right behind me who saw it laughed and said I looked like Bode Miller. I'm not sure if I should take it as a compliment or not, LOL.

That is quite a Bode move for sure. I understand there are circumstances were falling if there's a possible recovery isn't the best choice. I just wanted to point out that often it's better to just fall which I don't think a lot of skiers realize.

Absolutely ... I guess you can't educate too much on that. Failing to recover during a backward fall is a sure way to pop that ACL.

Indeed, yes, this is your ACL stretching to the max doing that move. Add some momentum to it, and....... I'm among the many who are vicariously hurting just thinking about it. Avoid this move if you have adult knees and ligaments. You need them.

Yeah, today we were straightlining down sunnyside in a tuck to get across the rope tow flats and back to collins. And there was this little lip, which I tried to jump/spring off of from a full tuck. OW.

I forgot I'm not used to trying squats that low since all the knee surgeries, and certainly not trying to jump out of it... No damage done, just that temporary ouch reminder that my knees don't always like doing the things that used to be easy!

Ok....you've all motivated me! I'm doing a squat on Sunday when I'm up the mountain! WOO HOO!!! SQUAT.....here I come!

I thought we were trying to UN motivate people from doing this? (People over 13 years old anyway)

Yeah....but I like a challenge! If you tell me that at 40 I can't do it....you know I will try! :D

Ann Bancroft used to say, " The best way to get a man to do something is to tell him that he is probably too old to do it." I love it!

Okay, but be careful and don't come running to us when you strain something!
