A memorable kayaking experience

kayaking

Kayaking is definitely one of my favorite summer sports. I have a no frills boat I can drag over rocks if I need to, and one with a big enough cockpit for my dog, who is so crazy about kayaking that she starts whimpering when she hears me getting out the gear in the basement.
I'm lucky to live only about a block from a launching ramp which gets me into Rhode Island's largest salt ponds. In fact, it's so big that I still haven't paddled the length of it. There are many spots to haul out and take a swim or have lunch.
The upper body workout is great, especially when I have to paddle against wind and current. I especially like being able to get into shallow bays and coves and seeing wildlife up close. My dog sits up front with her front paws on the bow, ears blowing in the wind, wearing a cute yellow doggie pfd. Boaters, especially kids, get a big kick out of seeing her.
(Hey, maybe we should have a thread about our pets!)

My husband and I had a memorable kayaking experience off the coast of Maine the day before our wedding nearly 10 years ago. We were in pretty shallow water (about 25 feet) and I thought I saw a spout off in the distance. Our kayaks were about 15 feet apart and we were just cruising along, when, about 15 minutes later, a minke whale surfaced between our two boats!!!! Minkes are not considered large whales, but believe me, when you're in a kayak and one surfaces that close to you, it seems immense. It sort of rolled over and looked at my husband, then kind of slipped over to me and did the same thing. It looked me right in the eye, then quietly swam away. No whales had ever been sighted there, and people were skeptical until several others saw a minke in the area throughout that summer. It was an experience that left me speechless, and something I'll never forget. What a great wedding present!

Great story. Nothing like a whale to take a good time kayaking and turn it into an experience of a lifetime. Even cooler, you got a wedding blessing from a whale!

I still have trouble putting that experience into words.
You should have seen me when the whale first surfaced near my husband. I was just kind of bug-eyed and speechless and helplessly waving my paddle.
After it swam away it was almost like it had all been a dream - but it wasn't!!!

That's awesome. I live right on the coast here in mid-coast maine and kayak all the time, never seen a minkes but lots of other wildlife. I fish and am always amazed at what i get to see daily while offshore. If anyone's ever in mid-coast maine this summer let me know, we can launch kayaks at the end of my driveway.

We were right off Prout's Neck, which is next to Scarborough Beach. It's very shallow there, right out to a small island that you can paddle to - I'd say about 30 feet deep. I'd been visiting that part of the coast since I was 4 years old, and no one had ever seen a whale in the area.
That's why I thought I was hallucinating when I first started paddling and saw a spout on the horizon. It was about half an hour later when the whale came right up to us that I knew that my eyes had not deceived me.
I know minkes aren't considered large whales, but let me tell you, in those little kayaks, that whale seemed immense! The way it quietly rolled over and checked us out with one eye, it was the coolest thing ever, especially since it could easily have given us a good thrashing.
People reported seeing it throughout the rest of that summer, but I don't think one has been seen in the area since.

Cyn that is so awesome, i'm a sternman off Hewitts Island and have not seen a whale ever while fishing. I have seen tons of seals, porpoise, etc.. I have had a seal surface next to me while kayaking and porpoise, and they seem large. I think seeing the whale that close is very special.

I live on the coast of Rhode Island, and I have a few fisher friends. One flies a tuna/sword spotting plane and takes photos from the air. You should see the whales and fish pics he emails me - amazing.
We have seals here too through the winter. When the water warms up they go north, so I don't see them when I'm on the water in summer.

cyn, we have so many seals and pups very cute, you should come up this summer, we live on a quiet cove with herons, eagles etc.. and can paddle to some great little islands (with beaches) very peaceful on Sundays when it's not legal for lobstermen to fish, thus quiet.
