A-Basin joins the IKON pass

More news on the multi-resort pass front: A-Basin is now IKON. You can read about it here.

Some of you may recall that A-Basin withdrew from the EPIC pass at the end of the season. According to the resort's blog, "We know that many of our guests want a multi-resort pass. We believe this pass solution will provide the ideal access to Arapahoe Basin while joining a team of excellent resorts and providing us better control of our business. With this addition, we will only be part of two limited passes (Ikon Pass and Ikon Base Pass) and we will no longer be part of very low-priced multi-resort passes."

Interesting.

That means A-Basin will be on Ikon while Loveland continues as part of the Powder Alliance. I think there might have been A-Basin season pass holders who were hoping for Powder Alliance instead of Ikon as a replacement for Epic. Some of the folks who hike for turns in Colorado or Utah, whether side country or back country would rather not shell out about $1000 for a multi-resort pass.

A-Basin chose Ikon over less expensive multi-resort options deliberately to try to keep the numbers down during holiday periods. Seem to be expecting most people who plan to ski A-Basin to go for the less expensive Ikon Base $749, which has blackout dates for holiday weekends. Ikon passholders can get a $20 discount on a day ticket for friends (unlimited), which is not the same as the usual limited number of Friends & Family discount.

A season pass for A-Basin only is $449 or $349 for Midweek. Also have other lower cost options for just a few days at A-Basin, and a 70+ Senior pass for $199.

8/2/2019, Al's Blog: A-Basin Joins The Ikon Pass
“…

Today we are proud to announce that we have entered into a partnership with the Ikon Pass. Skiers and riders will have 7-day access with no blackout dates on the Ikon Pass, and 5-day access with selected blackout dates (Christmas holidays, Martin Luther King weekend, President’s weekend) on the Ikon Base Pass. These restrictions and blackout dates will make our already busy periods more manageable.

We believe this pass solution will provide the ideal access to Arapahoe Basin while joining a team of excellent resorts and providing us better control of our business. For those unfamiliar with the Powder Alliance, it doesn't work quite the same as Epic/Ikon/MCP because there is no additional charge for a season pass holder (full price or premium version). The associated perk is 3 days at all the partner ski areas, free midweek or 50% off on weekends. It's been around for a while but is mostly locations out west, including several in CA and OR. Loveland in CO and Bridger Bowl in MT are perhaps the best known to folks who fly west for ski trips.
