50 CAR PILE-UP ON I-70!!!!

The local news just reported a 50 car "deadly" pile-up on I-70 in the mountains (it is DUMPING up there)!

My dad was in Vail today! I just called him to see if he was ok. He said that he got by the accident just after it happened, but he had NEVER seen anything like it! He said that there was a trailer that jack-knifed and every car after him slammed into the trailer and cars were upside down and on top of each other and smooshed. I told him what the news said, and he said he wouldn't be surprised if there were many fatalities.

He stopped to help and called 911, but he said it was such a mess, and cars kept coming that he didn't know what to do!

My heart is beating so fast thinking how close my Dad was to being in this! OMG! I am so sorry this happened to these people. OMG!

I'm so glad your dad is okay, he could have been seriously hurt just trying to help. This is my worst nightmare when driving those roads.

Very bad news. I am glad to hear your Father is okay, so many cars though, I am keeping my fingers crossed that others on here don't have friends or relatives that have been hurt.

ANOTHER MULTI-CAR ACCIDENT ON I-70 at Frisco!!!!

Highway is closed in FRISCO now!

They are NOW reporting that it is at least 70 cars in the pile-up!!!!!

That's terrible! I'm so glad your dad is well, NVG. I hope the best for all the dads, moms, brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, friends and loved ones of everyone involved.

NVG...glad to hear your dad is ok & made it by the accident. From CDOT, east & west bound Vail pass are closed d/t the accident.

The CDOT spokesperson on Channel 9 said conditions weren't that bad at the time for winter driving. No chain restrictions (except on Loveland Pass) and it looks like it was a case of people driving too fast and not being able to slow down and avoid the original accident.

I have a friends that was on her way to Vail for a snowshoe race several Sundays ago. Same thing. As they were coming off the pass, they saw a pickup truck going to fast & hit some ice. They got out to see if they could help and then the chain reaction started. They were horrified at watching other cars coming off the pass, slamming their brakes cuz of seeing the accident and then hitting the ice, overturning, hitting each and the center dividers. By the time it wa all said & done, there were another 7 cars that had crashed.

Oh that's AWFUL!

9News reported that it was a Semi that Jack-knifed (his trailer) and a Minivan slid into it and under it....and it just kept going! The driver of the Mini-Van was killed immediately and if you could see the van...well....it was really awful! It was coming off of the lower part of Vail Pass.

They said they are setting up a shelter if necessary in the Vail Interfaith Chapel...which is REALLY small! I don't think that is enough foom for 70 carfulls of people!

NVG, I'm very glad your dad wasn't inviolved but what a horrible thing to witness.

We just arrived at Silverthorne, the drive up wasn't bad, traffic was light. Visibilty was bad around the tunnel but in Silverthorne the roads were clear. I expected conditions to be much worse.

Local radio station said that 50 cars were involved, I don't know if the announcer was being dramatic but he said there will be a "major investigation".

The alternate route to Leadville is closed due to numerous accidents, traffic is stopped at Frisco and emergency shelters may be set up.

When we arrived at our condo we had to wade though a foot and a half of snow to get to the door. It was blown from the wind as I'm sure any snow on the stairs was shoveled this morning.

It's now snowing hard and I'm sure conditions are worsening.

Considering the events of this afternoon I'm not sure I'm happy that tomorrow looks like a powder day or sad for all the people whose lives were changed on Vail Pass today.

I have been watching the news reports, and it looks just awful. Accidents like that are just so scary, because if you came around the curve and saw the pileup, who's to say what might happen.

Glad your dad is OK, NVG, and +++++++ vibes to the people in the accident.

It sounds like all people I was concerned about are okay but just thinking about how easily it could have been people I know and care about, including Divas.

I can't imagine the guilt the truck driver who originally slid and went broadside will feel.

My dad said people were going just TOO FAST, including the truck driver, for the conditions. I just don't know how you CAN'T see that coming! 70+ cars!

Oh wow! We had one of those on I-90 last winter when a bridge iced over very quickly, one mile west of the ski area where I work. I forget the exact number of vehicles but it was somewhere between 50 and 70. No fatalities, luckily, and only 4 or 5 serious injuries. This occured about 20 minutes prior to me pulling out of the parking lot after getting off work at 3:30pm. They had the highway shut down completely, with no projected reopening time, several hours at the very least. I stayed and skied, of course, and even heard a rumor that the ski area was prepared to stay open past the 10pm closing time if the highway hadn't reopened by then. Fortunately for all concerned it was reopened around 9:30pm.

How lucky for your father, NVG! And here I thought I had a narrow escape at 20 minutes.
