Hi--First of all, thank you all at SkiDiva for this wonderful forum. I'm new to (y)our forum, and have found insightful, thoughtful comments. I hope I can contribute as well.
Re your question about Atomics. They are the only ski I use--i love them. I've read a lot about weight, etc. Yes, they can be heavy (I currently use B11, which are light and frisky, despite what I've read here), and Metron M11, with demo binding. I'm 5'8" 125 lb, 55 years old, and DO have chicken legs. I ski the B11 in 164, and find them to be tons of fun. I ski the M11 in 152, mainly because I use them for moguls.
The thing with Atomic is that you HAVE to use the edges. If you are a slider, they will not respond well. If you use your edges, you will have no issue with the weight, I think. I like Atomics mainly because they DO require that you ski well-they tell me right away when I'm getting lazy on the ski...!
My preference is off-piste, all mountain terrain, anything you can throw at me. I ride mainly diamond and some double-diamond, and each turn, each run and looking to create better technique. So if you call that "fun" as I do, well then you will like the Atomic series.
I haven't skied the women's Mama or Minx series, though. I am intrigued by the Mamas, esp Sugar Mama. My big problem here-and with the women's ski line--is that the manufacturers are so revolting in their graphics and names! (Yeah yeah, I know--I do love my Balanzes and they are a women's ski... so I actually think I would prefer a women's ski!). Simply put, I am too old to be called "foxy" or roxy or "luv" by a ski, and pink and pretty is simply not my style. And I'm sorry, but I'm already a "sugar mama" to a kid in college who is still on my dole! So I'm generally put off by how these manufacturer's "sell" their stuff to women...
So I know that part sounds silly, but I find attitude to be very important in any sport. My general ski-technique is aggressive and take-no-prisoners. My husband calls me a "ski-monster" because I am pretty much fearless, despite my age. So to put me on a ski with pink flowers and "luv" descriptions--well, I feel like I'm wearing a daughter's mini-skirt!
That said--I am RIGHT THERE to ski them, once the manufacturers settle down and give us a ski that LOOKS like they take us seriously. In the meantime, check out the M-11s--you are an expert skier, and so obviously have the technique to handle them. And they are such fine skis.
