Out on the trails in 2021

I thought I'd start a thread for those of us who get out onto woodland trails in 2021. Walking, hiking, running, whatever.

Got photos or stories? Here are two from a recent hike. The snow and ice are melting. Trails are mostly brown now.

This ladder bridge is over a sometimes-puddle that froze over. The water below the ice has seeped underground, leaving the ice suspended. Blue skies above, so the ice is reflecting the blue.

These roots stretch down the trail where it goes between the granite outcroppings. They make that path difficult to navigate. Such tenacious roots!

I love to hike and the opportunities are pretty much limitless here where I live. A multitude of access points to the AT (Appalachian Trail and by the way it’s pronounced App - a - latch -un ) and lots and lots of USFS land. I have a small group of friends that I go hiking with every Wednesday all year round. I don’t think we will ever run out of new trails to try. Last week we went to this waterfall. Margarette Falls. Great hike. Am looking forward to the Spring wildflowers. We have seen only coltsfoot blooming so far. The other early blooms will be putting on a show very soon. Thanks for starting this thread @liquidfeet!7D88D49E-28B4-431C-88E8-FFB61A79F3FA.jpeg9F49A10A-EFEC-4A00-8F05-C71D6CA457FE.jpeg56111164-ED62-4253-9712-D240CDEE82F3.jpeg

I stopped to take a bunch of photos today on my hike.
Here are some beech trunks. Beeches grow in dense stands, creating intense vertical lines of near-white color to the horizon in some places. I find them lovely.

Someone has hung prayer flags over a notch. They are white cloth, worn and frayed. They hang quite high over the water down below. They are full of writing but there's no way for anyone to read them. I finally found a place to stand where I could get a good image.

There's still some ice in the woods. It formed over standing water that has since seeped into the ground, leaving the ice suspended. On a sunny day the ice reflects the ski and appears quite blue. Here it's in the shade of a granite wall, looking more gray than blue.
IMG_1623.JPG
Those granite walls have lots of cavities. Surely somebody lives in here.
IMG_1627.JPG
I bet someone lives in this little cavity too.

Here's the "Squeeze Rocks" spot on one of my favorite trails. Squeeze through!

What lovely photographs! I'm ready to see some coltsfoot, as long as I can ski a little longer! We might have longer to wait, though.

Hiking is one of my favorite things to do! We recently moved to the foothills of the Sandia mountains in Albuquerque New Mexico, and we hike every chance we get. I have been here for three months, and I am in awe of the beauty of this place pretty much every single day. 2C54E6A6-BE82-4835-9BE9-4489D3C402F8.jpegE498B26A-C264-4176-A83A-80568DB3F864.jpeg0F8D2972-9EDA-4B6B-B0F2-4F6EAE8B612E.jpeg

I love New Mexico -- it's not called The Land of Enchantment for nothing! Someday I may end up back there...

Life can be so unpredictable! We never thought we would end up moving here and now we are making plans to stay for the long run... The Land of Enchantment is such a perfect nickname.

If you haven't settled down permanently yet, check out the Las Cruces area -- it truly has the best yr-round climate of anywhere I've ever been; in winter you can still be out in shirtsleeves, and yet be at a ski resort within a 4 hrs' drive.

I heard Las Cruces is great! We are planning a trip down that way. We have however settled permanently as we bought a house. I also love being 90 minutes from Ski Santa Fe because my fiancé doesn’t ski, and this means I can drive up every Saturday and still be home for dinner. Keeps the peace at home.

This probably belongs on the Diva Dogs thread, but Spencer and I took a little stroll on the trails a few minutes from home over the weekend. There’s a hidden meadow about a third of a mile in and it opens up to the most beautiful sky. It’s such a peaceful little area and the perfect spot to take a walk in the woods during lunch!

Took a trip Las Vegas two weeks ago. First photo from the Goldstrike Canyon hike at Lake Mead. Gorgeous hike through a slot Canyon that ends at the Colorado River. There are also hot spring pools that we sat in for an hour before hiking back.FB_IMG_1617791361776.jpg
Did a day trip to Death Valley. Spent the whole day on Titus Canyon Road. One of the best hikes I've done is this one to the top of Thimble Peak. The valley floor is behind me.

I puttered around Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom today for a change of scenery. There are a ton of lakes there.

Crystal Lake in Barton:

Went to a really cool state park, the Perry Holbrook State Park. It’s super beautiful and kind of hard to find right now because the sign has fallen off its signpost. We mostly had the place to ourselves and hiked to the summit. I just took pictures of the ponds within the park:07BFFF9E-41B8-4AE8-83B6-3CB0F563949D.jpeg58AE328B-5065-4781-B435-42BBE4AFCE8D.jpeg

Spring is a great time for hiking the Puget Sound lowlands and islands – – trails that we tend to overlook in summer, when alpine trails are snow free. Here are some photos from hikes I have taken recently.

Turtleback Mountain, Orcas Island. It's just second and third growth forest, and the trees on our islands never got that big anyway, but it's a pleasant hike to a wonderful viewpoint on the turtle's head. We heard owls and so many other birds.
