Snowmaking is the only reason there are ski hills in Virginia. A week ago, our home hill at Massanutten just managed to open to the top and only had one blue run open. For MLK weekend, around the clock snowmaking starting late, late Thu night made a huge difference. Now all the runs that usually are open all season are covered side-to-side and should have enough snow to weather whatever warm spells happen between now and the end of Feb.
It was pretty cold for the southeast, in the 20's all day, so even emptier slopes than usual. Got in as many runs as I could handle! Especially since all slopes are lit.

Mnut replaced their last original double with a relatively speedy triple over the summer. Meant even shorter lines for the holiday weekend for intermediate and advanced skiers on Lift 5. Never a line on Lift 6 that only serves the two black runs (Diamond Jim 3300 ft, ParaDice 4100 ft, about 825 vert).
We took some friends who moved to NC recently. They had been to Mnut 10 years ago and were impressed with all the improvements since then. Father and daughter are cautious intermediates who used to ski an even smaller hill in the Catskills. Mom is a non-skier who fully enjoyed having a sauna in our condo in the woods.
Massanutten MLK Weekend in Jan 2012
ParaDice at the top with nothing a week ago
ParaDice open, with ongoing snowmaking, empty all morning
ParaDice still empty at 2pm
Line for Lift 3 at base (Geronimo, easy terrain park) at 1pm, less than 5 min
