How Aspen Ski Co. supports employees when opening is late

The Aspen mountains are opening relatively late this season. In particular Highlands delayed opening to Dec. 16 and Buttermilk is barely open with only Panda Peak. Aspen Mountain and Snowmass are open but with more limited terrain than planned. As has happened before starting in the 1990s, Aspen Ski Co. (Skico) is helping out out-of-town employees who are supposed to be working but not drawing a paycheck yet by providing free meals.

Aspen Skiing Co. feeds employees who can’t work because of slow start
" . . .
Skico started feeding unemployed workers dinner on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays since the day after Thanksgiving, according to Jeff Hanle, vice president of communications. The meals are provided on a rotating basis at Bumps Restaurant at the base of Buttermilk and the Treehouse at Snowmass.

The number of diners has ranged from 100 to 160, Hanle said.

"As long as we can't get those guys fully employed, we'll keep feeding them," Hanle said. "It's meant for workers who would be starting full time but they're not able to."

That applies primarily to lift operators and other seasonal workers who have arrived from out of town.

All Skico employees, not just the unemployed ones, will be offered dinner tonight at the all-employee dinner. . . ."

That's thoughtful. I wonder how they handle housing for their out of town employees...do they have someplace for them or are they on their own?

I work at Aspen/Snowmass. They do a great job of helping new employees obtain housing.
As anywhere, there is a huge underground of referrals. As you meet people, many rentals are done via word of mouth, not public advertising.
