Eagle Co airfare

I fly into a lot of small airports for work or vacation so I know smaller airports can be more expensive. But I've been watching airfares to Eagle and it is so much more than I'd expect. It just came down to $661 from SEA (on United, via Denver). Given that we can fly to DEN on our dates for $242, that is an awful lot more for a short hop to EGE. I want to leave Beaver Creek on a Sunday--I don't want to use more vacation by coming back that Monday--and flying, even with a layover in DEN, sounds like a better option than dealing with Sunday traffic. It makes the whole trip to/from Seattle only a bit more than 4.5 hours. Does anyone know if airfares to EGE are about this high all the time? Is $420 more from DEN to EGE about what it normally is?

Check into flying into Hayden (Steamboat) airport. There's a direct flight and last year had airfare <$400. Drive from HDN to Beaver Creek is 1.5 - 2hrs and you don't have to deal with I70 or any passes. No shuttles however I believe, so you'd need a car.
