Do you lock up your skis?

Oh, @Finn that sucks!!!

I use the one with the key. The lock comes with 2 or 3 keys so My husband and i carry back up keys for each other.

Btw I want to hear all about the Kenjas, I'm on flair 81's right now, interested to hear the comparison to your (past) 78s.

I think I've seen the Ski Key racks at most of the places I've skied. It comes with 2 keys. When I use it I keep one key on a lanyard around my neck, and the second one either in my car, or in my boot bag, just in case.

Yes, always. Had to get burned though before this became a habit. Husbands newer armadas stolen last year at lunch at sunshine village in Banff, now we always lock them up or watch them at lunch when no lockable racks are available. 28 pairs stolen this year alone at sunshine village.

that really stinks.. does Windham have any cameras??

I have a combo lock. retractable cable. Depends where I am if I lock or not. I do worry when I don't lock them, thinking how dumb will I feel if my skis get swiped and I have a lock. Many times I do the swap w/some one else dividing 2 pair up and on different racks. I heard nice ski poles are now prize theft items! Stinks we have crooks on the slopes.

Yeah, I do the separation thing, too. I figure it just makes stealing them a bit more trouble. And I love my poles. If I'm the least bit concerned, I bring them inside with me (even when the signs say not to).

Last week DC commented on a single ski in the rack, so I explained that some people do that to make it less likely that someone will walk off with them. (They were brand new Ripsticks.) We stood there for a second, and spotted ski number 2 just a few racks over. If they had just walked over a few more racks, they might have noticed the free ski check.

I don’t lock my skis and come to think of it, I never see anyone else locking theirs either. I ski mostly at Park City and Deer Valley. I haven’t seen a ski key rack at either place. I wish I could say it doesn’t happen much here, but every few years, there’s a surge of thefts. It’s usually one young person, sometimes a juvenile, who steals a bunch of skis and then gets caught selling them on eBay.

My skis are used demos with a local ski shop sticker and bar code still on them, so they look like rentals. That probably deters thieves. Also, at Canyons, to get to the main lodge, you need a lift ticket and a gondola ride.

Forgot to mention when they stole his skis they also stole his poles and he loved them! I think he was choked more at the pole loss than the skis

I feel his pain. I'm casual about my skis - they're nothing anyone would want. But I do keep my poles with me more than the skis.

I'll grab my lock (not a super-duper one ...) when I'm home next week. I skied with someone today who made sure we could see our skis from inside the lodge due to frequent theft there. What a downer to worry about bad people stealing stuff.

Always lock mine, it's just habit now. It won't stop the determined thief, but in a rack of otherwise unlocked skis, hopefully the thieving toe-rag will grab an easier option. I have a four-combo cable lock.

Lock em or lose em. I have both ski key and Kryptonite cable lock. Just in case Ski Key is there. We have Ski Key at Tremblant.

But then again, I sell security for a living. So practice what I preach.

I ski Deer Valley and never considered locking them until I read this post. Good thing about Deer Valley is they have complimentary storage.

I don't understand NOT locking skis. I use a ski key, which seems to be available pretty much everywhere in Canada.

BF got a new snowboard last year that cost a pretty penny so we added ski check for $10 to our season passes. Often ski on the busiest day of the week while I’m in ski school so every rack is full and you risk serious damage while people let stuff pile up and my Leki trigger grip poles never seem to stay where I put them without straps. Also at Snoqualmie things tend to disappear since they’re next to I-90, even the house rentals! I was super paranoid about my demos last week. When we’re at Crystal he still locks up with a cable lock to keep the honest people honest, but I’m less cautious there, though I’ve heard of problems there now too. When all else fails we use my poles to secure things through his bindings and tangle up our gear so they move on to something easier to run with.

Now my cousin just uses Telemark’s that are on their third mount. No one is running off with those!

We usually lock esp in a base area--one reason is so that my skis aren't mixed up with someone else's S7s, which are fairly common. As a ski host, I was aware of several cases in which a skier ended up with a pair of skis the same brand--but not theirs.

I know that to rent equipment you need a credit card and the amount is charged right away for the day. The card is kept for damages, like this. Now the equipment wasn't rented directly by the Mother/Daughter but the tour director. I agree with the lawyer....so how did Mom pay for the trip in the first place? Why wasn't her card keep for damages. Not only the equipment, but the room.

So not to others, rent directly from the resort, not a tour!!
