Angel Diva
So this is really a mini report, but it was a big day for me! The Diva West attendees, and many of you, know that my season was cut short during Diva West by a snowboarder. Totally wrecked my right ankle and lower leg - 3 ligaments completely torn, broken tibia and fibula.
Well . . One surgery, 3 screws and 3 1/2 months of physical therapy later, @Ursula took me up into the beautiful Beartooth mountains of Montana and Wyoming. If you've never seen the Beartooth you have to add it to your bucket list! I've backpacked in these mountains and visited them over the years and they are truly spectacular! Last year, I skied them for the first time - a couple of backcountry runs right off the Beartooth Highway. But I was amazed there was enough snow up there this year to do some skiing as late as June 26th. Granted - the steep runs we skied last year were too bare. And the little ski area up there that is typically open from mid/late May through early July could not open at all this year. But Ursula found a nice little baby slope for me. Perfect for testing out my ankle!!
I had to wear my sister's larger boot on the bad ankle and Ursula adjusted the binding for me on my right ski and off we went. We hiked and skied it 5 times. Well .. . Ursula wimped out on the 5th hike and only went half way up. Since she had to listen to me whining about how poorly I was skiing, I really shouldn't be giving her any crap. (But that's not stopping me - Lol. )
Can't believe how tentative I was on an easy green, completely unintimidating pitch. Wow! I was actually a little nervous on that first run. The snow was this wavy, divoty stuff - soft and a little grabby but no excuses. It really gave me new insight into the psyche of skiers who are coming back from injuries ! A definite learning experience for me that will be very useful as I move forward in my ski instructor life.
Overall it was great fun and incredibly beautiful, and just SO good to be sliding on snow! We drove through the northern part of Yellowstone Park on the way back to Bozeman. All in all a fabulous day!!
Thank you SO MUCH Ursula.
Enjoy these few pictures. Screws come out of my ankle on July 20th and then I'll be aiming squarely at this upcoming season. Can't wait!!!
Ursula taking pictures of the closed ski area. If you look carefully, you can see the poles for one othe 2 poma lifts that service the terrain.
Ursula adjusts the binding on my Black Pearls.
Ready to hike!
Lunch break. Snow patch we were skiing in the background.
"Divoty", wind sculpted snow.
I hate selfies!! oops . . .
We left our mark.
