Any Hockey fans out there?

Not exactly an off season sport, since the playoffs for the Stanley Cup are just around the corner.
I was wondering if there are any other hockey fans out there, and who are you wanting to win the Cup this yr?
I played hockey for many yrs, as a kid and a big girl ! I love it as much as I love skiing !
I am hoping the Calgary Flames win this yr, but they have really struggled down the stretch, so we'll see what happens.

Hey CalGal - I have the Rangers-Islanders game on in the next room right now!

I was introduced to hockey in the early 70's (when the Flames were in Atlanta, not Calgary) and have been a fan ever since. Because I learned the game watching the NY Rangers, that's the team I've continued to follow. But I just really like the game; I'll watch (almost) any teams play. That's why my best gal pal, a Devils' season ticket holder, invites me to a game every now and again when she has a spare ticket, even if I do root for "the enemy".

Love the game because it's always moving; you don't have to sit there and wait for something to happen.

When we ski at Steamboat, sometimes we'll walk over to the ice rink to catch a local game. In addition to the guys, there's a strong female league; one team is called "Chicks with Sticks".

Big time. Avalanche season ticket holder, here. So, while I can't cheer for the Flames :becky:, I will cheer for the Habs IF (/when  ) the Avs are eliminated. I agree that Canada could use a Cup ... Anaheim, Tampa Bay, and Carolina are sort of really awful for that.

Go Habs Go!! I live in the middle of the triangle. Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. This year I'm going Habs. Well the Leafs are out it. Talked to Matt Stajan's Dad and Uncle yesterday at an industry event. They weren't too down about it. Also Go Bulls Go. My local OHL Junior team is 2-0 in the second round!! (Playing the Barrie Colts. These are the next NHL stars - Spezza and Stajan played here!)

I [heart] hockey!! Grew up a Rangers fan but now I am a long-suffering Caps fan.....Tomorrow is do or die....!

LET'S GO CAPS!!

I dated a Caps season ticket holder when I lived in DC, early 90s, days of Ciccarelli, Courtnall, Langway, Callleeee Johannnnsssssson, et al. Had to be escorted out of a game against the Devils one time (my ex was the egregious offender, not me -- it was when Sean Burke was the Devils' goalie, and my ex wouldn't stop harassing him ... oh, those were the days)

Pequenita - So with the Rangers you weren't "long-suffering"?

Their most recent Stanley Cup was in 1994; before that... 1940 - 54 years earlier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Uh... WELL before my time, BTW)

Wow great response !!
I love this time of yr....because I can go skiing during the day and cruise home and watch a hockey game. My Dad loves to watch the games, and sometimes I watch with him, but he likes to repeat in words what has just happened on the ice, so I have to tell him...."Dad I am sitting here with you and I just saw that !"
Then he calms down a bit....hehehe
I would really like to see the Capitals make the playoffs. I think Ovechkin is unbelievably talented and great for the game, and the playoffs would be so interesting with him involved.
The Habs have a great team again this yr and after many yrs of not doing much in the playoffs I think they have a great chance to go far this yr. I like Joe Sakic and sad that the Av's are not in it this yr. I got to watch Sakic as a Swift Current Bronco in the 80's when I lived in Saskatchewan. I also played a lot of hockey there, not much else to do !
I grew up in Northern Alberta and was a huge fan of the Edmonton Oilers. The glory days with all the Stanley Cup wins were so much fun.
It would be nice to see the Cup won by a Canadian team again, but once my favorite is out of it, I just enjoy watching whoever happens to win. Those guys get so beaten up and they look so happy when it's all over!!

Calgal isn't it great living in Canada and having CBC. Does your Dad ever do the armchair coach thing. - "Hit him, hit him, go get him" My Dad still does! I grew up watching hockey on Saturday night, so its not Saturday night in the winter without hockey!! DH would have the largest screen available just for that!
And as for Don - love him or hate, he speaks the truth!!

Actually, that was last year. This year they will be either 6th or 7th seed in the West.

I never played hockey, but I would have loved to. They have girls teams here in Colorado now, but not when I was growing up. Everything about hockey falls right into my athletic skills set, so to speak. Maybe in my next life ...

Jilly it's terrible how much arm chair action there is with my Dad, especially if something happens against his beloved Oilers !
I have a new HD tv and so does my Dad, and watching CBC in HD .... simply awesome!! Ya gotta love Don......wouldn't be the same without him on the Coaches Corner.
I also grew up watching Hockey Night In Canada.....I usually had a game to play on Saturday and then would watch on TV at night!

OOps I thought that the Av's were out ....sorry!
Great news I get to see Joe play more! I think it was the Canucks I was thinking of.
Pinto, it is never too late to start a new sport. I know women that have started later in life and they love it. You would be surprised at how fast you get better at it and how much fun it is!

I've thought about it, but I'm already so darn busy that I have a hard time fitting in the stuff I already do ... and I'm not willing to give those things up yet. Plus, I can't even play soccer anymore (I have no ability to dial it back and act my age, but my body IS its age ... the day after is always brutal) -- hockey would be uber brutal.

But I love it so much. I always had this weird little idea that I was Czech in a previous life, because my favorite sports are skiing, tennis, soccer, and hockey. :loco: :noidea:

Touche. I meant long-suffering in a "half the league gets into the playoffs and we're the in the ridiculous 'Southeast' Division (with Florida teams!) and can't even get into the playoffs" kind of a way. :becky:

Loved the Calllleeee Johannnnnnnsssson impression! That's impressive - getting escorted out of a hockey game takes skill. The only thing I've been escorted out of was -- to my horror -- a Lego convention!

Unfortunately, I'm going to the Caribbean today, and unless I find a computer, I won't even know how the boys do! Ack!

big time devils fan here........

But I grew up watching Hockey Night In Canada (I lived only 1 mile from the border and we only got CTV). Grandfather was a HUGE Canadiens fan and our family just purchased a brick in his memory for their anniversary walk. I love pretty much any Canadian team too.

Devils Devils Devils. We live next door to Rangers Rangers Rangers. Whew! We clinched. I will be very sad when the season ends...

DH plays in a league. We sometimes have to cut our ski sundays short so he can make his game.

I am a Clarkson alum, a very small university that has a GREAT Div I team. Just lost to Michigan in the Frozen Four East finals last weekend played in Albany. :(

Wings all the way...BABY! Lucky for us, we also get canadian tv, so we get to watch lots of hockey. For Mother's Day a few years ago, my kids gave me a Steve Yzerman Bobble head doll. What sweeties

FYI...Houghton (MI) where I live, was the site of the first pro hockey game in the US.

Just can't wait for the playoffs (especially with the Tigers 0-4 right now)

I  hockey, although I'm more of a college hockey fan than the NHL. I like the NHL, just don't follow it too closely.

I spent my entire Friday and Saturday and part of Sunday last weekend glued to my couch watching the NCAA regionals. My team (Miami University) unfortunately missed out on the Frozen Four (which I'm REALLY unhappy about since it's in Denver this year) by a spectacular, kinda lucky goal in OT (they dominated the entire game, including OT with the exception of 2 really crappy minutes in the 2nd period).

Any other college hockey fans?

p.s. Although I don't really follow it closely, my NHL teams are the Avs (gotta cheer for the hometown team!), the Red Wings (grew up near Detroit), and the Devils (lived in NJ for awhile). Kinda funny that there are some decent rivalries amongst my favorites! We actually moved here from NJ a couple of weeks before the Devils and Avs were playing for the cup in '01.

Oh yeah, and I had a *major* crush on one of the TB Lightning when we were in college (um, yeah, I baked him cookies...didn't work, though ). So, I kinda cheer for them because of him. And wonder what might have been if only he had had any interest in me whatsoever! :laughter:

Just got email from my sis, she was at the Wings game when they clinched the Presidents cup. Also, she got to meet Gordie Howe, shake his hand, etc. Now, that is just the coolest.

For any of you Devils fans, Randy McKay lives about 1.5 miles away from here...he went to school here and they came back here to live, so the Cup has been here a few times.

I hate the Avs, what a bunch of cheap shot artists...HISSSSSSSS and I can't wait for the playoffs to start. Always interesting to figure out which round the Wings will get knocked out of...1st or 2nd:yell:

I do follow college also (because of MTU) but haven't followed the frozen four this year. The college hockey polls originate from this area, so you can't always catch the college action on the radio.

Because of our proximity to Canada, we also get CBC and I love to watch Don Cherry. Even my girls get a kick out of him. Those suits are just awesome. I can always tells Canadians by the way they pronounce "out" "about" and "Detroit"
