Great picks! The North Face has some of the best technical outerwear out there for women. Another great thing about The North Face is that products like fleece and layering can be worn year round--camping, hiking, etc. Thanks for all of the other great recommendations!

Bee, I think you're right. Plus with all the demands on us -- children, work,
home -- women just feel that they can't afford to be injured. Who'd pick up the
slack if we were out of commission, even for a little while?

I read this post and your post on "Why Don't More Women Ski?" back to back. I think there's a real connection. I blew out my ACL skiing a few years ago and went through the incredibly painful reconstruction and rehabilitation (worse than childbirth!) In my post-injury period, I was surprised by the number of fit, active and althletic women who told me that the fear of blowing a knew led them to give up skiing as they aged. (I'm sure seeing me on crutches for weeks didn't help!)

I think a lot of women are aware of the increased risk to their knees, so tend to tone it down or limit their involvement as they age, and the prospect of injury looms larger....

Sorry to hear about your knee, but it sounds like you're in good hands. And thanks for the tip about the book. Might be a good one to investigate.
